Homestyle White Turkey Sausage Gravy

January 19, 2017

Have you ever been to Cracker Barrel and had their biscuits and sausage gravy? If you have some true American Spirit, at some point down the line I am sure that you have stopped at a Cracker Barrel. They always offer delicious and flaky biscuits with the richest white sausage gravy you ever did see.

Since I don’t eat that anymore, I thought I would make the best Homestyle White Turkey Sausage Gravy that you ever did taste. You’re welcome.

Changes

In my fat ass days, I would have several batches of their biscuits and sausage gravy without regrets. Suddenly, regret would sit in about an hour later when my stomach was killing me. And you ask why? Lactose intolerance is real, people. And, so is binging.

Thinking back, I never really thought that cutting out dairy—even sugar & flour—was an option in my life. Now that I live with mostly no dairy products in my daily nutritional intake, I’ve converted all of the junk ingredients I once used in the kitchen and found alternatives to which my body could agree with and adapt to. Anything from milk and cheese to yogurt and cream cheese…it has been completely eliminated from my life with substitutions that are definitely up to par with my bodies standards. Insert happy food = happy body!

Fairlife Milk

Instead of regular milk, we have made the change to using Fairlife, an ultrafiltered milk from grass-fed cows that are free to roam in the pastures of the farm where they live. I don’t know which I love better, the fact that they are family-owned and supported by the Coca-Cola or that they have happy cows, point blank.

After finding out about how wonderful their milk really is and how much richer it is a nutrients, as well as proteins,  we made a complete conversion from our previous lactose free milk, Lactaid. They have a patented ultrafilter process that filters out the lactose versus chemically removing it like other brands. This way, you get everything that is good about cow’s milk and say goodbye to the bad stuff.

Seriously though have you ever seen the commercial of their happiest cows ever? Fairlife Farms has the most gorgeous cows I have ever seen in my life. And, for a moment there please consider the fact that we took a cross country legendary road trip last year where we saw heck of a lot of cows, happy and very unhappy… None of those cows could compare in cuteness to the Fairlife cows. We recently found out that you can visit their farms so we plan to do so on our next big road trip. Trust me, we are already thinking of when we are going to pack up and get back on the road.

Gluten-free Flour

Anyhow, I’ve also talked about not eating flour at all here on the blog. Over the years, my wife and I have come up with appropriate substitutions for staples any American kitchen should have. My absolute favorite is a gluten-free flour combination we make ourselves. The recipe is one part oat flour and one part almond flour. To make either oat flour, simply grind up some old-fashioned rolled oats in your food processor. For the latter, pulverize raw blanched almonds until fine. I store both of these in separate glass canisters on my kitchen countertop.

When it’s time to use a gluten-free flour for recipe idea I have up my sleeve, I simply combine the oat flour and almond flour, according to how much the recipe I am planning will call for. The kitchen countertops are decorated with our lovely glass canisters. Not only do they look gorgeous, but; they serve us well as storage purposes. Our kitchen is always well stocked with our favorite kitchen staples. Anything from chia and hemp seeds to coconut sugar and coconut flour to raw cacao powder and more, we’ve got all the goods.

The Gravy

There is absolutely nothing in the world like the combination of flour and almond flour for a perfect Homestyle White Turkey Sausage Gravy. I may not have come up with a recipe for biscuits that are gluten-free, just yet, but the best gravy is here anyhow.

You can basically just slather this on anything! Drizzle this on your eggs or put a dollop on your quinoa/rice, you can use it as a dipping sauce for your gluten-free lunch wrap or pour some onto your dinner flank steak, whatever you want. It might even be tempting to want to drink it right out of the pot…

If you like to use Ezekiel toast, use a butter knife to slap some on. We are a family made of gluten-free waffle fanatics! Here at our house, we like to make a wafflewich with anything. This is the perfect sauce to coat your wafflewich with. I have a few recipes already for some of our favorite wafflewiches. I plan on coming out with more, possibly covered in our scrumptious Homestyle White Turkey Sausage Gravy.
