Careless Spending

February 17, 2016

Have you ever woken up and had one of those mornings where you just don’t even want to look into your bank account on your mobile banking app? I’ve had one of those days and I’m sure you have too, heck, we all have.

Sometimes we let money get a little bit out of control. Careless spending is fun and, I mean, who doesn’t like to buy a thing or two for themselves without checking your bank account first? And, let’s just be real

Sometimes our bills are piling up to our knees! Do you have bills up to your eyeballs? Everyone does, even if there’s money in the bank to pay them. You pay one bill and, then, another one comes, it’s the never ending cycle of money. You shouldn’t wake up every day scared to look at your bank account and neither should I! Do you use mobile banking? Anything particular you like about your bank that makes you stay with them? We’ve got to start somewhere and we’ve got to start now. My family and I have personally had, thanks be to God, financial blessing upon our lives.

Regardless of financial stability, there’s always a bump up ahead in the road! What do you do when you hit a bump in the road? Do you like to sit around and cry a little or do you get angry?

Whichever one, it’s absolutely normal to feel emotion and want to act upon it, but; in order for something positive to happen with our finances, we must make good decisions when it relates to spending. With the recent release of the budgeting spreadsheet tool, we got into a little bit more detail as to how you can better plan out your spending. I plan on sharing an upcoming post going in depth about the spreadsheet so stay tuned!

As I start to pick and poke at this topic here on the blog, I am unraveling some pretty good tips and tricks on how to cut corners on careless spending. Even if you just forgo that one trip to Starbucks twice a week for your favorite caramel macchiato, you’ve got yourself $5 or $6 that you could’ve carelessly been spending instead of saving AND that’s horrible for you anyway.

Straight coffee is another story…For me it’s an iced latte with no sugar and maybe almond milk from Dunkin Donuts. I know, horrid. I told you I am pretty good at spending money. I absolutely love DD Perks from Dunkin Donuts. It’s fast, cheap, efficient and, I mean, it has its perks! But that doesn’t mean I need to go every single day and pick up a latte because by the end of the year the amount I spent on coffee outside of the home {yes, I have a freaking coffee machine} will definitely break the bank.

It’s all in the little things that pileup and amount to much more than we think. We think we need it because we're living in the moment and we are obsessed with the now. I like to pinch my pennies though, so when I carelessly spend too much on something that I shouldn’t, I typically feel pretty bad about it and I look to see how I can improve upon those decisions in the future. You got to worry about pinching the pennies of the future because no one else will do it for you and pay your kids college fund on your behalf, if you know what I mean.

In this life, we’ve got to trust God but the decisions are all you, baby! He’s given us the tools to learn and the free will to make our own decisions.

These talks about money & finances are to stimulate the use of those tools He has given us from long, long ago. Money is the root of all evil and we have to be wise enough to not let it get the best of us; this is the process of learning to use money wisely and not go on a careless spending rampage that will bite us in the ass later.

To live humbly, one must make certain sacrifices that may carry their own weight down the line, you will be blessed in return. I don’t cut back on spending because of the blessings of the future, I’m learning to do so because it’s the right thing to do as a family, the blessings are included in the package however you look at it…The Bible says it is guaranteed!

What have you learned from your spending mistakes? Do you use a budgeting tool? Let’s all come together to save money, work towards debt-free living and learn a little something about the financial world that we didn’t wake up knowing about yesterday!
